-Ger Verbs

  • Verbs that end in –ger (voyager, nager, plonger, manger, etc.) undergo a spelling change to keep the pronunciation regularity.

Ex. Je m’amuse, nous nous amusons.

  • This spelling change occurs in the nous form of the present tense and in all forms of the imperfect except that of nous and vous in verbs whose infinitive ends in –ger.

Ex. Je nageais mais vous ne nagiez pas.

  • The verb prendre and verbs built on this same stem (apprendre, comprendre, etc.) are irregular in the present tense.

Ex. Je prends/ Nous prenons, past participle: pris

  • The verb découvrir and verbs like it (couvrir, offrir, ouvrir, etc.) are conjugated like –er verbs in the present. To find the past participle, add –ert to the ending. (offert, etc.)

Ex. Je découvre Paris.
