Fiches de Révision: Imperatives et Faire Causatif

Usage:

  • The imperative forms are used to give commands or extend invitations.

Ex. Choisis les cours qui t’intéressent.

  • Make the sentence more polite by adding

Ex. Explique-moi cette histoire, s’il te plait.

  • Turning the phrase into a question will make it less direct.

Ex. Tu peux m’expliquer cette histoire?

Formation:

  • 3 different imperative forms, depending on whom you are addressing:

  • Second person singular, for the form, used when speaking to informally.

Ex. Finis tes études!

Note: er verbs drop the of the tu form.

  • The first person plural form, based on the form, used when the speaker is included in the command.

Ex. Assistons à cette conference!

  • The second person plural form, based on the form, used for more than one person or people you don’t know.

Ex. Ecoutez!

  • Three verbs frequently used in the imperative are irregular: their forms are based on the subjunctive:

                       Avoir                                 Être                                                     Savoir

Aie, Ayons, Ayez         Sois, Soyons, Soyez                      Sache, Sachons, Sachez

  • When the imperative is negative, the ne precedes the pas verb, and the follows.

Ex. Ne sèche jamais ce cours!

Faire Causatif

  • To indicate that the subject is having something done, use the verb faire + infinitive.

Ex. Parfois un élève fait rire toute la classe.

  • NOTE: The pronouns that accompany the infinitives in the last two examples are direct object pronouns. The infinitive in the faire causatif construction can also take an indirect object, and indirect object pronoun, or y.

  •

Ex. Elle a fait envoyer son dossier à l’université.
