Past Infinitives
-
Compare the structures:
avant de + present infinitive = avant de partir
après + past infinitive = après être parti(e)
(avoir/être + past participle)
-
Infinitives are used after prepositions, with the exception of en.
-
Following the preposition après, a past infinitive must be used, as in the example.
-
English equivalent is adding –ing to a subject-verb construction.
Ex. Après être allés en France, ses parents ont ouvert un restaurant.
(After they went to France, her parents opened a restaurant.)
Après avoir retrouvé Saba, sa mèrel’a emmenée en France.
(After finding Saba again, her mother took her to France.)
